  • Watch Mojo, you need to do your research before you put out utter crap lists like this. Every Breathe You Take isn't about a stalker. Sting has stated on several occasions that the song is about Big Brother, and the utter loss of privacy as we moved into the digital age with cameras on every corner. PLEASE do your damn research next time.

  • The reason why "Born in the USA" is misinterpreted is that Bruce Springsteen is such a poor singer than you cannot understand the words. The only lyrics I can make out is "Born in the USA." I have no idea of what any other lyrics he is supposed to be saying. One song that you missed is "Happy Together" by the Turtles. Everybody seems to think is a happy upbeat song about two people in love. In reality it is a depressed fantasy about unrequited love. Imagine me and you, I do . . Imagine how the world could be, Note the key word Imagine in the lyrics. The narrator is not singing about reality but what he imagines, what he wishes to be true. Also, this interpretation has been verified by the author of the lyrics.

  • Once an artist makes their creation available for public consumption it no longer belongs to them alone. Art is meant to be subjective both culturally and on an individual level. Great art is often intentionally layered with meaning and sometimes left open for interpretation for various reasons. If Puff The Magic Dragon touches you because of your childhood, struggle with addiction, enjoyment of weed, or simply because you like dragons it makes little difference at the end of the day. Admittedly, however, their will always be art with a very specific message, e.g. Every Breath You Take. There will also, unfortunately, always be artists who, years later, claim their work always or really did mean this or that for whatever reason, which is bullshit imo. Born in the U.S.A. is meant to give you mixed feelings hence the "proud" air punching and patriotic imagery of the video. We acknowledge the fucked upness of American culture but do little to change it whether out of laziness, apathy or sheer oppression, etc... Life isn't black and white and art imitates life. Don't get pissed off if someone misses something or perceives it differently. Art is also meant to do many things including create dialogues. We can't have meaningful discussions about art with closed minds.

  • And a few artists didn't mind making a buck or two off the misinterpretation.

  • A song that became misunderstood was "I dreamed a dream" when Susan Boyle did it on Britain's Got Talent. People kept saying "Ooh, it's her story in that song". Eh? It's from Les Miserables and is about someone's life turning to crap after being seduced at an early age and dumped when she got pregnant and is sung by a pox riddled prostitute who has sold her hair and teeth to pay an abusive inn keeper and his wife to " look after" the resulting child. What are they not telling us about Susan Boyle?

  • Puff The Magic Dragon is a song about growing up and leaving behind childhood fantasy. Not sure why you have it in honorable mentions other than a lot of hippies thought it was about smoking pot. As Peter Yarrow explained, the song was written in the late 1950's, about eight years before he ever smoked weed. I have nothing against marijuana, I smoke it often, but I am sick to death of people taking a harmless song about childhood and adding a drug reference to it. There are plenty of tunes about smoking weed, but Puff isn't one of them.

  • Government Empowerment and enrichment of Hostile Anti American countries and their Peoples.      Indians calling themselves Native Anti-Americans have been given Casino's throughout America. For over 50 years these stone age criminals main income has been supplying the lower tier of the Lethal drug cartels pyramid by granting $2 to $4,000 to Mexican and various south of the boarder invaders called illegal immigrants on to the lower tier. The Goal is about 500% profit but more importantly the death toll on white USA youth ages 15 to 35. Since 1975 over 20 million USA and Canada youths were killed by lethal dose drugs and violence. USA kids killed were replaced by the wealthy Brown killer drug dealers who pay off the justice system to deal their killer product.     The Anti American Jewish USA Mob and English drug dealers have taken over the media with the help of double agent Presidents and corrupt FCC. They have a monopoly on Jewish Stations and British Shows. Each venture making a trillion dollars yearly all taken out of USA and not paid USA taxes on. These moneys have been spent to assure we are The United Slave States of Israel and Britten, the European Union and China are us. All anti-American entities should be made to surrender their Monopolies and all profits to the USA Federal Government of America for reassignment to American broadcast companies. Tax evasion and election manipulation have been a strength of anti-American entities but this will stop and all non-citizens Deported and asked to pay a 80% royalty tax to the USA Gov. for all shows broadcast here.      The Catholics Vatican bank started 30% money laundering the Mexican and Colombian cartels in the 1960's. • "Born in the USA" can be both patriotic and criticize American Politics because the USA is one of the few countries where we can openly criticize our government without fear. I've understood the meaning of that song since I first heard it and consider it a ICONIC Patriotic song. We are the greatest nation on Earth "because" of our freedom to strive to be even better!

  • There's a reason "everyone" gets the meaning of "Closing Time" wrong. The lyrics don't support the meaning that the writer claims for it. And, um, it's been known for some time that Phil Collins wrote "In the Air Tonight" about his then-wife's infidelity. And I don't know *anybody* who thought "Born in the USA" was intended to be patriotic.
